The Complete Dorm Room Checklist
Moving into a dorm? This is everything you actually need—no more, no less. We've helped thousands of students avoid buying stuff they'll never use.
The Essentials
Bedding
- Mattress topper — Dorm mattresses are terrible. A 2-3" memory foam topper is essential.
- Twin XL sheets — Dorm beds are longer than regular twins!
- Pillow(s) — Bring your own, don't rely on what's there
- Comforter or duvet — Pick one you actually like looking at
Storage
- Bed risers — Add 6-8 inches of storage space under your bed
- Under-bed storage bins — Use that new space!
- Over-door organizer — Shoes, toiletries, snacks
- Desk organizer — Keep supplies tidy
- Closet organizers — Hanging shelves, shoe racks
Tech
- Power strip with USB — You'll need more outlets
- Extension cord — Outlets are never where you need them
- Laptop — Obviously
- Headphones — Respect your roommate
Bathroom
- Shower caddy — Portable, take it to the shared bathroom
- Shower shoes — Non-negotiable for shared bathrooms
- Towels (2+) — More than you think
- Toiletry bag — Keep everything together
Laundry
- Laundry bag/basket — Collapsible saves space
- Detergent pods — Easier than liquid in dorms
- Stain remover pen — Trust us
What NOT to Bring
Skip these—most students regret bringing them:
- ❌ Printer (use campus printers)
- ❌ Iron (use a steamer or campus laundry)
- ❌ Too many decorations
- ❌ Full-size anything (mini versions exist)
- ❌ Expensive stuff you'll worry about
Pro Tips
- Coordinate with your roommate — Don't both bring a mini-fridge
- Wait to buy some things — See what you actually need first
- Measure before you go — Know your closet and desk dimensions
- Ship heavy items — Easier than packing in the car
